Price County law enforcement panel approves two ordinance changes, clears $50,149.95 in vouchers and hears staffing updates

At its May 7, 2026 meeting the Price County Law Enforcement Committee approved two ordinance amendments, authorized vouchers covering April charges, and received multiple departmental and operational updates.
Larry Palecek, committee chairperson, opened the meeting and the committee approved an ordinance amending Price County Ordinance Sec. 223-19 (Definitions) on a motion by Robert Kopisch, seconded by Patricia Stephan; the motion carried and the amended draft was forwarded to the Price County Board of Supervisors for consideration. The committee also approved an amended Habitual Animal Offender ordinance (Sec. 223-44.1) and forwarded that measure to the full board (see separate article on that ordinance).
The committee heard introductions from two recently appointed officials: Amy Casey introduced herself as the newly appointed Price County Coroner (took office on either April 9 or April 10, 2026 according to the minutes) and Alexis Nash introduced herself as the new Price County District Attorney with an office start date of April 6, 2026. The Clerk of Circuit Court reported that the office is fully staffed and that the current clerk has filed a non-candidacy notice; the minutes note there will be a newly elected Clerk of Court in 2027.
On operations and staffing, the committee discussed the Bug Tussel radio project, noting the original plan projected an 18-month timeline but that after two years there has been no official project start date. Sheriff Brian Schmidt provided staffing updates: Deputy Hohensee is returning after military leave, an individual named Dawson is slated to begin work soon, and a new recruit with the surname Boggs is scheduled to complete training in September as a part-time deputy. The committee also received routine updates that Canine Dixon is scheduled for recertification in Michigan later in May and that, per policy, a retiring handler's canine retires with that handler. The jail population was reported as 16 inmates with one person on EMP.
The committee approved Law Enforcement vouchers for April 2026: $45,260.82 for Sheriff and Jail and $4,889.13 for Clerk of Court, Coroner and District Attorney (motion Kopisch/Stephan; carried). The committee scheduled its next meeting for June 4, 2026 and adjourned at 10:02 a.m.
