Northvale Board approves tentative $15.32 million 2026–27 budget, schedules April 30 public hearing

The Northvale Board of Education on March 18 approved a tentative 2026–27 school budget totaling $15,316,773 and authorized staff to submit the plan to the county superintendent and advertise it for public review. The board set a public hearing and final adoption vote for April 30, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. at the district’s All Purpose Room.
Superintendent Michael Pinajian thanked Business Administrator and Board Secretary Susan Dykstra and the Board’s finance committee for months of work producing a budget the administration says maintains personnel and programs while remaining fiscally responsible. The tentative budget lists general fund expenditures of $14,247,776, anticipated revenues of $2,518,007 and taxes to be raised of $12,798,766. The document also includes a $62,238 adjustment for increased enrollment and a $561,795 adjustment for higher health-benefit costs.
The board approved limits and reporting required under state rules for travel and related expenses, noting the district established a $6,200 maximum for the current year (with $1,135 expended and $945 encumbered to date) and authorized up to $4,750 for travel reimbursements in 2026–27. The Business Administrator certified that, per N.J.A.C. 6A:23A-16.10, no budgetary line-item account had been over-expended as of January 31, 2026.
The meeting also approved related finance items: authorization to participate in a cooperative purchasing system, adoption of a confidential settlement agreement with parents of a student, a request to join Northern Valley Regional High School District in applying for a $300,000 LEAP implementation grant to support a Career and Professional Learning Center, and a $9,800 withdrawal from the maintenance reserve to fund a water-main repair. The LEAP application passed with one recorded abstention; other finance items passed by majority roll call votes.
The district will post the tentative budget on its official website in the form required by the State Department of Education and hold the April 30 public hearing before considering final adoption.
