Bethany Beach committee greenlights local bike‑safety video plan with Office of Highway Safety collaboration

The Bethany Beach Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Committee agreed in June to move forward with a locally produced bike‑safety video series designed to reach visitors, seasonal workers and residents.
Julie presented a three‑video proposal: one static rules video covering Delaware bike‑law basics and two community engagement interview pieces to surface common misconceptions and then provide expert responses. The Office of Highway Safety will continue to cover pedestrian messaging, and Julie said OHS has agreed to share complementary content so efforts will not overlap.
Members emphasized focusing the interview material on a short set of priorities — visibility (lights, reflectors, mirrors), correct direction of travel, helmet use and advice about sidewalk riding in complex spots — and suggested using one staged interview to model incorrect answers followed by an expert corrective. "Have the interviewee give an incorrect response and then interview an expert to correct it," one member said, noting that approach helps viewers learn common mistakes and the right response.
Committee members recommended that videos use Bethany‑specific footage (crosswalks, Collins Street pathway, trolley and parade staging) so messages resonate with visitors and renters. Julie will circulate a PDF with the proposed question set and narrow the array to 3–4 final questions; committee members will provide feedback by email.
Next steps: Julie will finalize the script and interview list, coordinate approvals for any Office of Highway Safety content to be reposted or adapted, and share a draft for committee review before distribution on the town website and social channels.
