El Paso County proclaims July 4 for America’s 250th; commissioners and guests mark anniversary

The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on June 23 to adopt a proclamation recognizing July 4 as America’s 250th celebration in the county and encouraging residents to participate in local festivities.

The proclamation, read as part of the agenda, cites the historical importance of the Declaration of Independence and invites residents to observe the anniversary with patriotic displays and community events. The recorded and in-person speakers accompanying the proclamation included Congressman Jeff Crank (recorded remarks), Brig. Gen. Brad Butler (retired, who reflected on his military service and the meaning of the anniversary), and District Attorney Michael Allen (who emphasized the rule of law and the responsibilities of civic participation).

Crank’s recorded message celebrated the nation’s 250 years of freedom and praised the efforts of Americans who defended liberty. Butler reflected on personal and civic meaning of Independence Day and encouraged participation in county events. Allen said the justice system’s commitment to fairness is tested during difficult times and urged continued service to the rule of law.

County staff and commissioners also used the occasion to brief the public on county commemorative programming — including the "Moments That Made Us" campaign and fair programming tied to America 250 and Colorado 150 — and to relay consumer fireworks safety guidance for unincorporated areas from a TNT representative.

Motion to approve the proclamation was moved, seconded and passed by roll call 5–0. Commissioners said the observance and the communications campaign aim to increase civic engagement and provide educational opportunities for families.
