Committee hears pitch for a Worcester sports commission and discusses feasibility of hosting NCAA events

Walter Byrd presented a proposal for a Worcester Sports Commission to coordinate sports tourism, leverage facilities such as the DCU Center and Polar Park, and pursue events that drive economic activity. Monique Joseph, president of Discover Central Mass (DCM), told the committee DCM already operates a sports arm and performs many functions a municipal sports commission would do, including bidding, trade‑show attendance and maintaining a facilities inventory; she cautioned a new municipal commission could be redundant and noted that adequate hotel inventory, not marketing capacity, is the primary barrier to hosting NCAA March Madness regional rounds.
Chief Development Officer Peter Dunn said the city manager intends to prepare a report on the petition and staff’s role in partnership with stakeholders. The committee agreed to a chairman’s order requesting the city manager report back on the proposed commission; the committee also filed related informational items about NCAA hosting feasibility and related requests.
Councilors and witnesses emphasized coordination between Discover Central Mass, venue operators (DCU Center, Polar Park), colleges and citizen stakeholders. Discover Central Mass offered to expand public outreach and to invite councilors to committee meetings.
