District coordinator Ishmael (Ish) described the Community Schools model and its four pillars—integrated student supports, expanded learning time, family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership—and summarized the grant funding by site and the five‑year structure designed to encourage sustainability. He said La Cumbre (a junior high) has the largest award at just over $1.4 million for the five years, McKinley and Harding receive approximately $1.1–1.2 million each, and La Cuesta continuation (smallest population) receives just over $700,000.
Ish emphasized site‑based stakeholder decision making and the requirement that sites produce sustainability plans because Year 5 grant funding steps down by 25%. Trustees expressed support, asked site‑specific questions about community engagement (notably McKinley), and were told principals and partners have already begun family nights, art partnerships and student exhibitions.
The board voted unanimously to approve the Year 2 plans and accept the Year 1 update. Staff will continue coordinating site design teams and monitor sustainability progress.
