Multiple community members and school staff used the board's public-comment period Oct. 26 to press the Hainesport Township Board of Education to reach a contract settlement with teachers and to ask for clarity on COVID reporting.
School Business Administrator Robert Kraft read several emails submitted to the board from local residents. During the in-person public-comment period speakers including Laura Stupar, Michael McMullen and Doreen Clark thanked teachers for their work and urged the board to settle contract negotiations. Community members asked questions about how the district reports COVID cases and how quarantine rules were being applied; at one point a resident asked for follow-up with the superintendent after the meeting on matters not appropriate for public discussion.
Karen Kinter, identified in the minutes as a school faculty member and president of the teachers' union, read a prepared speech urging the board to resolve outstanding contract issues. Public commenters expressed support for teachers and asked the board to return to negotiations with urgency.
The minutes record that public comment closed at 8:03 p.m.; the board did not take action on contract negotiations during the Oct. 26 meeting as recorded in the published minutes.
