Hamilton Township Environmental Commission accepts ANJEC stewardship grant, advances pollinator projects

The Hamilton Township Environmental Commission on May 13 recorded that the council’s resolution accepting an ANJEC open-space stewardship grant had been received and that commissioners Karl Vetter and Claudia Shaughnessy signed and returned the acceptance paperwork to ANJEC.
Commissioner Claudia Shaughnessy, who leads the commission’s Green Team pollinator work, said she has reached out to the Girl Scouts about placing a monarch dome at commission garden locations and is awaiting their response. Jeanette Bergeron prepared an overview and proposed breakdown for how the grant money could be used; that document was sent to Bianca for approval and will be shared with the commission once finalized.
The commission discussed on-site maintenance needs at Wing Haven and other gardens. Shaughnessy told the group that Wing Haven currently lacks a permanent border for the garden footprint and is suffering from heat-related stress; Public Works is providing a water truck about once a week but she said the gardens need more frequent watering. The commission agreed that Carrie Feuer would query administration about whether permanent water jugs are allowed and whether Public Works has surplus supplies.
Commissioners noted progress at other sites: George Dye is in good condition; Endicott is blooming as a wild garden; the Library rain garden is struggling in the heat and staff will request reinstallation of a hose from Public Works. At Alexander, a Boy Scout will install a monarch dome with supplies donated through the Alexander PTO. The commission also placed informational boxes at the Library rain garden and at Vets Park that will be restocked with trifolds and Clear Rain Clean Drain flyers as part of grant outreach.
Next steps: the commission will circulate Jeanette Bergeron’s grant breakdown once Bianca approves it, pursue administrative approval for permanent water jugs at Wing Haven if allowed, and coordinate volunteer work with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as outreach responses are received.
