Lakeville presents parks master plan and community facility study findings; survey planned for August

Parks Director Macy Archon introduced consultant Brian Hartjes of HKGI to update the council on the parks and trails master plan and a parallel community facility feasibility study. Hartjes said the process has included stakeholder focus groups, an open house, online surveys and targeted interviews; the team plans a statistically valid survey in August to broaden input.
Consultants reported that roughly three-quarters of current survey respondents agree a community center is appropriate and said priorities include a walking track, gymnasium space and individual fitness offerings. Hartjes said the team is evaluating how to size a facility for a Lakeville built population of about 90,000, how to phase initial construction and how to provide flexible room sizes and outdoor connections. The team is also studying heritage-center uses, potential arts-campus upgrades and strategies to right-size park acreage along growth corridors such as Cedar Avenue.
Council members asked about likely membership costs, the school district's capacity to supply gym space, and land availability for a centrally located facility. Parks staff said land-acquisition timing and identifying a site appropriate to long-term growth will be important next steps. Consultants said implementation and site options will be presented this fall as part of two final reports.
