Mayor praises public works, awards contractor who cleared sidewalks for seniors

"These men are truly the unsung heroes of our winter," the mayor said, adding that crews worked long shifts, sometimes in near-zero visibility, so emergency vehicles and school buses could continue to operate. The mayor said the decision to send crews was made after seeing a local news story and that staff went to Riverview at midnight and returned the next morning when streets proved unfamiliar.
The mayor also presented a "Do The Right Thing" award to contractor Reggie Crawford, who organized a crew to shovel and salt sidewalks and driveways for seniors. The mayor noted that Crawford’s team cleared more than 130 senior homes and declined tips while doing the work.
City leaders asked the community to join the mayor in thanking public works and the contractor; no formal policy action resulted from the recognition during the meeting.
