Union City's streets department reported plans to repair sinkholes in Municipal Lot #1 and to conduct smoke-and-dye testing to verify storm-water infrastructure integrity.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips said he and Borough Manager Cindy Wells met with Tim Wells to assess sinkhole activity in Municipal Lot #1. The recommended immediate work is for Mansfield to fill the sinkhole, replace approximately 10 feet of pipe and install a new catch basin. After those repairs, smoke-and-dye testing will be conducted to identify any further leaks or failures.
Council was told the borough is awaiting quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving to pave the repaired area and the catch-basin vicinity. Business owners who use the municipal lot and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified in advance of smoke testing and any work that affects access.
The council later authorized applying for up to $100,000 in CDBG funds for a portion of the storm-water repairs in Municipal Lot #1; contractor selection and scheduling were listed as next steps. No contractors or dates were finalized at the meeting.
