Board adopts K–8 curricula, hires substitute teacher and approves staff development

The Ogdensburg Borough Board of Education on Nov. 5 approved a package of curricular documents covering K–8 subjects and several strands of visual and performing arts, computer science, SEL competencies, career readiness and civics.
Superintendent David Astor presented the curriculums, and the board voted to adopt the OBSD World Language curriculum; Science K–5 and 6–8; ELA K–2, 3–5 and 6–8; Math; Comprehensive Health and Physical Education; Computer Science and Design Thinking; Career Readiness, Life Literacies, & Key Skills; and multiple Visual and Performing Arts strands. The board also approved the 2024–2027 Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) three-year plan.
On personnel matters, the board affirmed the Superintendent’s October Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) report (two substantiated incidents) and approved Rupinder Kaur as a substitute teacher at $120 per day. The board authorized staff attendance at professional development: Ms. McGuire for a "Conquer Mathematics" workshop (approx. $425) and Mr. Rennie to attend the New Jersey School Boards Association workshop in Atlantic City (approx. $850). The board also approved multiple field trips for the 2024–25 year, including 6th grade trips to Liberty Science Center and Sterling Hill Mine and an 8th grade FBLA trip to Kean University.
The board approved the updated Staff School Safety and Security Plan and authorized Ms. Cooper to attend an NGSS workshop at Montclair State University (estimated cost $225.28).
