DPW and Fire chief present 2025 budget requests; council urged to pursue NJDOT alternative grant

DPW and public-safety budget presentations occupied the council’s attention as department leaders outlined capital and operating needs for 2025.
DPW Assistant Supervisor Jake Kinney presented requests across operations and capital: road repairs, street sweeping services, equipment requests including a lawn mower and excavator attachments, replacement of a mason dump truck, a pump to aid with water-main breaks and a possible used street sweeper. Kinney asked council members to consider funding for hydrant repairs and playground wall pavers.
Chief Gordon presented his department’s budget request, walking the council through increased line items including range fees, vehicle maintenance, training and maintenance agreements; he also discussed auctioning older vehicles such as a Tahoe. Councilman DeMeo said the borough should pursue the 2025 NJDOT alternative transportation grant, recommending an application of at least $500,000 given administrative requirements and competitive considerations; he said a virtual public meeting will be required before the end of March to file an application. CFO Mike Marceau was not present at the meeting but council members agreed he should be included in further budget and contract discussions.
The council did not adopt a final budget at the Feb. 10 meeting; further review and a draft consistent with CFO guidance are expected before formal adoption.
