Assessment finds major deficiencies in Josephine County's radio system; commissioners ask staff to pursue funding

A technical assessment by Day Wireless presented to the Josephine County Board of Commissioners on July 2 concluded the county's public-safety radio communications system has widespread deficiencies and likely needs comprehensive replacement.
The report identified failed microwave paths, degraded signal strength, aging infrastructure, equipment failures, battery and repeater deficiencies and dispatch console issues. The meeting record states the report "concluded the existing communications system requires comprehensive modernization rather than incremental repairs." The commissioners said the system is a public safety priority that touches the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Management, Public Works and other operations.
Commissioners discussed possible funding pathways, including Full Faith and Credit financing and grant opportunities through FEMA and Oregon Emergency Management, and asked staff to research similar projects in neighboring counties for cost benchmarks. Staff were directed to continue gathering cost estimates, funding information and grant opportunities and to include a standing agenda item on the communications system until a long-term replacement strategy is established.
Next steps: Staff will provide cost estimates and funding research and return updates to future County Administration Workshops as a regular agenda item.
