County approves $29,810.72 change order after extra excavation at former fuel station

Public Works staff told the Josephine County Board of Commissioners on June 30 that fuel odors discovered during decommissioning of a former county fuel station required additional excavation and testing.
Richard Pike said additional concrete removal, soil sampling, hauling and environmental testing were necessary after contamination was found beyond the project's anticipated limits, and that testing confirmed contamination was "significantly less extensive than initially feared." Commissioners approved a $29,810.72 change order to cover the extra work and were told that required remediation has been completed and no further work is anticipated.
Commissioner Colene M. Martin moved to approve the Old Fuel Station Decommission Change Order; Commissioner Gary L. Richardson seconded the motion. Upon roll call the vote was recorded as Commissioner Richardson — yes, Commissioner Martin — yes, Commissioner Smith — yes. Motion carried 3-0.
The Board discussed the importance of the additional environmental investigation to ensure contaminated soils were addressed and the transparency of reporting larger contract changes to the public.
