Orange rolls out expanded Parent University academies and announces Parent Pride conference

The Orange Public School District described an expanded Parent University program and related family-engagement events aimed at supporting parents and caregivers.
Superintendent Dr. Fitzhugh introduced Parent University and invited Ms. Alcantara to outline this year’s offerings. Ms. Alcantara said Parent University, now in its third year, runs fall and spring semesters and includes four academies: Health & Wellness (including House Music Dance Fitness and Drumming for Wellness), Adult Learning (workshops on social change and Youth Mental Health First Aid), Visual & Performing Arts (dance and artist-led workshops), and Academic Support (sessions on autism support and behavioral strategies, delivered in English and Haitian Creole).
Ms. Alcantara noted the district uses QR codes on posters to allow parents to register online and emphasized that all classes are free. She encouraged community members to participate, citing partnerships such as Cooperman Barnabas for training courses and Pathos Creative for arts programming.
The district also announced the 8th annual Parent Pride District Parent Conference and Resource Fair on Nov. 23, featuring workshops on math, science and STEM, bilingual sessions, free raffles and lunch. The Department of Special Education and Behavioral Intervention will host a SEPAG virtual meeting on Nov. 20 focused on ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences), and the inaugural Bilingual Parent Advisory Council meeting will be held Nov. 18 at Rosa Parks Community School with translators provided.
District leaders said the initiatives aim to strengthen parent skills, support student well-being, and increase family engagement in school programming.
