VBPD approves DARS continuation and awards $200,000 to VCU for sensory-adapted dental care project

The Virginia Board for People with Disabilities on Dec. 3 approved two grant-related items recommended by its Investment Committee: a continuation funding request from the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) for year two of a customized employment project, and a $200,000 award to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Occupational Therapy to fund a project titled Enhancing Inclusive Dental Care in Virginia: Statewide Training and Mobile Demonstration of Sensory-Adapted Dental Environments.
Jason Withers, staff to the Investment Committee, told members that all multi‑year grantees must submit continuation proposals to access second‑year funds and that procurement delays had produced a later than expected project start for the DARS grant. Following review, the Board approved the DARS continuation application; during the full Board vote Mr. Richard Kriner recused himself from consideration.
On the Dental RFP, the Grant Review Team reviewed five proposals and recommended VCU’s Department of Occupational Therapy for the available funding of approximately $200,000. Mr. Withers summarized the VCU proposal and said the project would provide statewide training and a mobile demonstration to improve inclusive dental care for people with disabilities. The Board approved the GRT recommendation on a motion by Ms. Jen Kelly.
At the Investment Committee meeting earlier in the day, the committee had recommended the DARS continuation for Board approval. Committee minutes record the committee vote carried despite one committee member, Mr. Tim Capoldo, voting against the continuation recommendation; the full Board later approved the continuation application with Mr. Kriner’s recusal.
