Lawnside Board approves superintendent contract, temporary sick bank and multiple resolutions

The Lawnside Board of Education on Oct. 24 adopted a package of administrative and financial resolutions and took several personnel actions, including approving the superintendent’s contract and a temporary 90‑day sick bank.
The board approved Resolutions #149–157, a bundle that the Business Office presented covering line‑item transfers, new contract rates, the 2024–25 health and safety checklist, an SOP manual, the biannual Statement of Assurance for paraprofessionals, acceptance of extraordinary aid, the superintendent’s contract (Res. #156) and approval of a temporary sick bank (Res. #157). The motion to adopt the resolutions passed at the meeting; the roll call record shows some members withheld support on items 7, 8 and 9 as noted in the minutes.
The item drawing the most public attention was the temporary sick bank proposed by Lawnside Education Association President Brent Hoover. The board agreed to present a 90‑day temporary sidebar or policy to allow staff with medical emergencies to draw donated sick time. Board Solicitor Darryl Rhone advised that the process would not create a HIPAA exposure for the district and recommended confidentiality agreements for committee members who review requests.
Following an executive session on personnel and legal matters, the board voted to terminate Staff Member #164 for "Show Cause." The motion carried on a roll call that recorded five yes votes, two abstentions and one absent member; the minutes record the motion as carried. The board entered executive session at 8:28 p.m. and reconvened at 8:35 p.m. before taking the personnel vote.
The board also accepted a $10,000 donation from the Lawnside Education Foundation, presented by Foundation President Christopher Raines. The board approved routine fiscal business, including Treasurer and Board Secretary reports for August and September and payment of bills (the minutes list a principal line item of $502,795.98 among ratified amounts).
Board members commented on public reaction to the meeting: Ms. Hayes said there had been a "false narrative" about whether the board intended to vote against the superintendent’s contract, and said she had voted against the contract because of concerns about the process. Solicitor Rhone reiterated that members of the public had the right to speak on behalf of the superintendent and clarified procedural steps for the contract vote.
