Lawnside board discusses school meal changes and DoorDash policy referral after Nutri-Serve presentation

At the Sept. 12 Lawnside Board of Education meeting, a representative from Nutri-Serve reviewed the district's 17-year partnership and described menu changes intended to increase student participation, including four entrée choices and dairy-free alternatives. The vendor said menus will continue to be refined using student feedback and highlighted planned special events such as Johnny Appleseed Day and Dr. Seuss Day. The representative also described an online ordering system for parents of Pre-K through fifth-grade students.
During public comment, Lawnside educator Karen Carter urged that students be given an opportunity to participate in the district's school-lunch survey and said she planned to help students access the survey during lunch. Lavina Taylor suggested the district post the survey QR code around the cafeteria and make it available during lunch periods.
Board member Ms. Harper raised concerns about the use of third-party delivery services such as DoorDash and asked whether the board would take action. Board President Ms. Forrest suggested Ms. Harper discuss the issue with Dr. Johnson, and Board Solicitor Darryl Rhone recommended the policy committee review and present any recommended policy to the full board. The policy committee later requested second readings on related policies, including Policy 3542 (School Meal Program Arrears).
The discussion prompted a directive that the policy committee examine delivery and meal-program policies and return recommendations to the board.
