County highlights litter grant work, correctional work center cleanup and new mattress recycling program

County staff told the Public Works and Planning Committee on July 7 that a combination of county and Correctional Work Center crews, community outreach and education is producing measurable cleanup results and new waste-diversion programs.
Lisa Kaye presented county litter-grant activities, showing before-and-after photographs of cleanup sites and saying the Correctional Work Center "does most of the heavy lifting" for roadside cleanup while her outreach work helps correct misinformation and engages residents. She said crews cleaned long-neglected stretches such as Cobb Road, that outreach at farmers markets engaged more than 1,000 people in two weeks, and that the county distributes promotional items to reinforce anti-litter messaging.
Solid Waste and Convenience Centers Director Matt Davis provided monthly metrics: landfill brush intake of 130.3 tons ($5,445), 846 tires taken in ($2,079) and total landfill revenue of $7,524 for June; collection staff handled 3,404.02 tons overall and convenience centers took in 2,746.72 tons. He reported school collections were 201.83 tons and recycling totaled 455.47 tons for a 13.4% recycling rate in June. The transfer station processed 9,685.93 tons in June and has processed 100,751.14 tons in its first full year of operation.
Davis also announced a mattress recycling program beginning Aug. 1. "We're moving forward with our mattress recycling program," he said, and the county will charge $25 per mattress or box spring at Rockville, Leanna, Smyrna convenience centers and at the county landfill.
Committee members praised the cleanup work and thanked crews for responding in heat and making the county safer and cleaner. The committee approved the Solid Waste report on a voice vote. The mattress program and outreach efforts will proceed as announced; staff offered to provide more detail or follow-up as needed.
