Paramus Board approves inground pool and sports court at 38 Oliver Road with drainage condition

The Paramus Board of Adjustment approved an application to install an in-ground pool and a sports court at 38 Oliver Road during its Jan. 8 meeting, and the approval included a condition addressing drainage.
Attorney Matthew Gilson and the applicant’s engineer, Mr. Gdanski, presented the proposal and reported site coverage of 61.2%, a side-yard setback of 6.5 feet, and a pool equipment pad at 6.3 feet. The applicant, homeowner Peter Shikar, said he intends to provide a safer play area for his three sons and locate the sports court in the backyard.
Board members asked technical questions about the pool drains, the location of pool equipment relative to existing AC pads and the proposed materials for the sports court. Mr. Nicoletti asked about pool drain details; Ms. Kamal asked whether the children currently play in the driveway; Mr. Nicoletti also asked whether the pool heater would be gas or electric.
During public comment, neighbor Daniel Sung Park said he has experienced basement flooding and asked about drainage. Chairman Thomas Locicero discussed the flooding concern with Mr. Park. The applicants’ attorney and engineer stated that proper drainage would be installed as part of the project.
Mr. Reda moved to approve the application with drainage; Mr. Scrivanich seconded the motion and the board recorded the vote as 7–0 in favor. The approval was conditioned on appropriate drainage measures to address neighboring flooding concerns.
