Paramus reorganization: Nadera elected council president; mayor outlines 2026 priorities

The Borough of Paramus held its 2026 reorganization meeting on Jan. 5 in Council Chambers, where newly re-elected members were sworn in, Alfredo Nadera was elected council president and Mayor DiPiazza delivered a State of the Borough addressing the year ahead.
Councilwoman Jeanne Weber and Councilman Michael Wilkins each thanked residents and supporters after being introduced and sworn in. Brian Giblin Sr. administered the oath to Weber; Mayor DiPiazza administered the oath to Wilkins. Mayor DiPiazza thanked borough employees and public-safety personnel for their work in 2025 and said the council will focus on park improvements, continued support for the Police and Fire Departments, Fair Share Housing matters and participation in the United States’ 250th anniversary observances in 2026.
During the meeting Mayor DiPiazza asked for a motion to elect a council president. Councilman Robert Kaiser moved to elect Councilman Alfredo Nadera; Councilman Ace Antonio seconded. The council voted unanimously in favor (yeas: Antonio, Kaiser, Nadera, Rizzo, Weber, Wilkins), and the motion carried 6-0.
The mayor presented a series of appointments to boards and commissions. The meeting recorded both mayoral appointments requiring council advice-and-consent (for example, members of the Board of Adjustment, Library Board and Historic Commission) and appointments that do not require council consent (including Planning Board designees, recreation and emergency-management staff). The council confirmed the slate of advice-and-consent appointments as part of a grouped motion later in the meeting.
Mayor DiPiazza also asked the council to approve a group of one-year professional-service contracts, including borough attorney, architect, engineer, planner, auditor, bond counsel and other legal and consulting services. Councilwoman Jeanne Weber moved to approve Resolutions Nos. 26-01-32 through 26-01-56; Councilman Michael Wilkins seconded. The council approved the contracts unanimously, 6-0.
A large package of organizational and administrative resolutions covering the council meeting schedule, order of business, designation of official newspapers and various financial and purchasing authorizations was presented and approved by unanimous vote (Resolutions Nos. 26-01-01 through 26-01-31; motion by Councilman Ace Antonio, second by Councilwoman Jeanne Weber).
Len LoPinto and library staff presented commemorative books to the mayor and council during a short library presentation. The meeting closed with a benediction offered by Father Don Hummel and Sheik Moutaz Charaf and adjourned at 7:03 p.m.
