Paramus commission renames Earth Day event 'Paramus Community Day' and outlines logistics, budget concerns

The Paramus Environmental Commission voted unanimously on Jan. 12 to rename its community spring event from "Earth Day" to "Paramus Community Day" and began planning logistics, partnerships and funding.
"Motion to change name," Elisa Giblin said; Bob Riccoboni seconded the motion and members voted all in favor.
Members discussed coordinating the celebration with other borough departments (shade tree, police, fire, DPW, recreation and the pool) and the high school for artwork and flyers. Nicole Smith said the borough office has handled flyers in recent years but that high-school designs can be used if submitted on schedule. Commissioners recommended partnering with the school and other commissions for a broader community block party emphasizing sustainability and the borough’s 104th birthday.
Procurement and funding were prominent concerns. Nicole Smith said a new banner would require three quotes from vendors and that the traffic department may not be able to produce an entirely new banner. Commissioners discussed seeking sponsors to cover costs; Riccoboni suggested listing sponsors on materials. Members also noted that leftover donations tied to clean-up grants (about $400) cannot be reallocated and that some funds are restricted by their original grant purposes.
Operational constraints were also discussed: DPW staffing and overtime limitations may affect interactive activities such as a "touch-a-truck" exhibit, and a subcommittee was suggested for the Environmental Resource Inventory. The commission did not set final dates or a complete budget at the meeting; staff said applications and approvals for the event would proceed through the borough office and mayor-and-council as needed.
