The Hobart Redevelopment Commission on March 16 voted to increase the 2027 education and workforce training grant pool from $30,000 to $50,000 and approved a requested revision to a Maryville School Corporation project scope.
Commission members moved and seconded the funding increase during the meeting and approved it by voice vote. Developer Kate read a letter from Terrell Taylor, construction trades instructor at Maryville High School, explaining that the project will pivot from building eight outdoor food-pantry boxes to designing and constructing eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets — one for each named community school — to better protect donated goods from weather and vandalism and to allow staff oversight of distributions.
The letter, included in the packet and read into the record, described the change as a stronger proposal that preserves the service-learning element for students while addressing liability and spoilage concerns. Kate and staff told the Commission the revised scope will remain within the originally approved budget and will still provide students hands-on carpentry and project-management experience.
Commission discussion focused on the rationale for the scope change: indoor placement reduces exposure to weather and vandalism, allows inventory control and helps add hygiene and clothing items not covered by other social services. Staff recommended accepting the revision as presented in the letter; a motion to accept the revised application was made, seconded and approved on a voice vote.
The Commission's action increases the pool of grant funds available for the 2027 cycle to $50,000 and formally records acceptance of Maryville's revised approach. The meeting packet indicates the revision was received by email prior to the meeting. No additional conditions for the grant revision were recorded during the meeting.
The Commission also handled other business during the same meeting, including contract change orders, a property blight determination and routine claim approvals; the board adjourned following closing remarks and staff updates.
