The Emmitsburg Green Team voted to finalize a community survey to inform its action plan and set a May 27 deadline for responses, and members organized an Earth Day cleanup scheduled for April 25.
The survey and outreach plan will use an online form. "So what I could do is, like, if I get, like, the direction on the survey itself and we're good and have the deadline, like, near the end of May, that gives us time," the Chair said, adding that the team will circulate a final proof to members before distribution.
Why it matters: team members said a targeted, timely survey will give clearer input than mailings and could be used to help the town meet broader program goals such as downtown strategies. The group discussed avoiding confusion with a separate downtown survey and agreed the Green Team’s questions should be visually distinct.
Members debated outreach tactics to increase participation. Committee member (S2) said in-person engagement often yields better responses, suggesting tabling at Jubilee or neighborhood meals. The Chair added she had ordered volunteer shirts, biodegradable trash bags and prongs for cleanup volunteers and will bring maps and supplies for an organized start at 10 a.m. on April 25.
The team also discussed partner outreach and publicity channels. Committee member (S4) noted she contacted local churches and suggested the NewsPost; members discussed using bulletin boards, sandwich boards at Jubilee and the town newsletter for residents who don’t use social media. The Chair said she had reached out to a NewsPost contact and would follow up.
Members asked the Lions Club and other partners to consider health-screening and blood-drive options at future community events. "The Lions Club has a mobile screening unit where we can do vision, hearing, blood pressure, pulse ox and blood glucose screening in an air conditioned van," Committee member (S2) said, recommending those services be included in health-and-wellness outreach.
Next steps: the Chair and a colleague said they will finalize the survey questions and circulate a draft to team members for sign-off; the group will reconvene later to review survey results and convert responses into an action plan.
Ending: The meeting closed after members confirmed outreach tasks and volunteer plans for the cleanup; a motion to adjourn carried by voice vote.
