During the public-comment portion of the meeting, Carol Mayer asked the council and the community for help sustaining Faithful Friends, which she described as the city's only no-kill shelter. Mayer said rising costs for food and veterinary care have strained the organization's budget and limited kennel capacity; she asked the council for ideas and urged residents to consider small recurring donations.
"We're the only no kill shelter in this town...If half the people in Neosho would give us $5 a month, That'd probably see us through," Mayer said, adding that the shelter has been in operation since about 2008 and she has volunteered for nearly 18 years. Mayer said the shelter tries to reclaim dogs for owners when possible, spays and neuters animals, and vets them prior to adoption.
Council thanked Mayer for speaking; no staff financial recommendation or commitment was recorded during the meeting. Mayer provided a contact phone number and said she would return to speak about fireworks at a future meeting.
