City staff updated the council on persistent structural issues with a baler purchased three years ago for the recycling center. The machine is now out of warranty; staff said the manufacturer has agreed to split costs and send an engineer from Canada to work with a local contractor and restore a one-year warranty after repairs.
Staff estimated the city's share for the engineer and warranty restoration to be between $7,000 and $10,000 and mentioned a $13,750 figure for the engineering visit portion they will pay; additional repair costs for steelwork and welding remain to be determined. "The company is willing to go a split cost with the city to send an engineer down here…after that they will put a new 1 year warranty back on this machine," staff said. Staff said they will prepare a budget amendment when final totals are available.
Council asked about equipment life expectancy and purchase price; staff said the baler originally cost about $88,000 and expressed surprise that structural issues arose so soon after purchase. Council requested staff return with final repair estimates for budget action.
