Short Federal Avenue storm-drain repairs to begin in Old Town Emmitsburg; town says work should take about two weeks

Town planner Najila Hassan said the Federal Avenue storm-drain replacement in Old Town Emmitsburg will install two inlets at East North Avenue and run a pipe down Federal Avenue to an inlet at East Main Street to address recurrent flooding in the neighborhood.
"So the Federal Avenue storm drain improvements... two inlets are being put on East North Avenue, one on each side, and then a pipe will run down Federal Avenue connecting to the inlet by East Main Street," Hassan said, and added the contractor must submit shop drawings and a traffic-management plan before work begins.
Hassan told attendees the contractor estimated the Federal Avenue work would take "not more than two weeks," pending final approvals. Mayor Frank Davis said the town awarded the work to a local contractor and that staff would coordinate the schedule and access to avoid overlapping closures (for example, not closing the block in front of the church at the same time as other nearby work).
Residents asked where the work would be and how it would affect on-street parking and pedestrian access; staff identified the work site as Old Town Emmitsburg at the Federal and North avenue intersection (across from the Sprankles and the Cooch houses) and said they would post updates on the town website and Facebook page and notify signed-up residents by email or text.
Hobbs Excavating was named at the meeting as the local contractor expected to perform this short project. Town staff said they will publish a traffic-management plan on the town site when it is finalized and reserved the right to limit closures to local traffic only.
