The Ottumwa City Council voted to approve the sale of city-owned property at 113 East Maple to Enrique Sanchez for $9,800 after a public hearing with no in-person or written comments.
Planning and zoning coordinator Jake Rush told the council the city accepted bids until May 7 at 2 p.m. and "we received 1 bid from Enrique Sanchez in the amount of $9,800 and the staff recommends accepting that bid." The chair opened the public hearing, asked for comments and reported none had been submitted.
Clerk Chris read Resolution No. 100And55, 2026, recommending acceptance of the bid and approval of the sale. Council moved, seconded and adopted the resolution; the roll call recorded affirmative votes from the council members present.
Why it matters: The sale disposes of a city-owned parcel and transfers responsibility for redevelopment and upkeep to the buyer. Staff noted the property is large and will require substantial work, which likely limited interest to one bidder.
What was said: Jake Rush said the parcel "is a very big property" and that the work required "turns some people away," explaining why only one bid was received. The council recorded the sale formally by passing the resolution.
What happens next: The resolution authorizes the sale and any necessary signatures to finalize the conveyance; council did not receive public opposition during the hearing and did not request additional conditions at the meeting.
