Elkton council hears sewer, water and staff updates; WaWa slated to open mid‑2025

During reports and committee updates at the Jan. 21 Elkton Town Council meeting, Public Utilities Chair Rick Workman said a sewer line replacement project has started on Lewis & F Street and that Phase 1 of a drinking water project will begin soon. He also said public works crews have been clearing streets and will start sidewalk work.

Town Manager Greg Lunsford told council that a WaWa store is scheduled to open in mid‑2025 and that the Planning Commission is handling three special exceptions; he noted the Board of Zoning Appeals needs another member. In staff reports, EACC/Events Manager Heather Kite said center memberships have increased 34% and walk‑ins have increased 80% as the center hires new staff and prepares programming for 2025. Treasurer Donna Curry reported that Donna Gooden retired Dec. 31, tax bills are due Feb. 5, auditors completed on‑site work last week and a final audit report is expected by the end of March.

Public Safety Chair Louis Heidel said the evidence audit is nearly finished and flagged speeding on Newtown Road; council authorized placement of a speed sign to help address the issue. Town Attorney Quinton Callahan said code amendments and special exceptions will require public hearings, and he reported an ongoing real estate assessment appeal by Elkmont Manor with no trial date set.
