The New Melle Board of Aldermen on Aug. 13 accepted the first reading of Ordinance 485 (Bill #500), which would annex a 64.20-acre tract owned by J Brothers LLC at 678 Foristell Road.
Mayor Steve Burt read the ordinance by title. Alderman Gary Schneider moved to conduct the first reading by title only and Alderman Brian Nelson seconded; the motion was adopted unanimously. The board accepted the first reading and suspended the second reading to a later meeting.
The ordinance cites Section 71.014 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri as the authority for annexation. No vote on final adoption occurred at the Aug. 13 meeting; board members said the second reading will occur at a later date after required notices and any additional staff follow-up.
Why it matters: annexation would bring privately owned land into the New Melle city limits, potentially changing zoning, service responsibilities and tax status for that property. The ordinance identifies the property and owner (J Brothers LLC) and states the legal authority for annexation; the board took only the procedural first step on Aug. 13.
Next steps: the board must hold the second reading before the annexation can be adopted. Staff and the property owner will complete any outstanding agreements and notices before that hearing.
