Emerald Isle board approves audit contract, creates Youth Advisory Council and hears new Fire Department program

At its April 14 meeting the Emerald Isle Board of Commissioners approved routine administrative items and heard presentations about community programs.
Finance Director Laura Rotchford recommended and the board unanimously approved a one‑year audit services contract with Sharpe Patel CPA of Raleigh for $30,259 to audit the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026. "Sharpe Patel is an experienced audit firm," Rotchford said; the board’s Audit Committee had recommended the firm unanimously.
Town Manager Frank Rush asked the board to formally establish an Emerald Isle Youth Advisory Council to engage high school students — ideally Emerald Isle residents or property owners — in local government. Mayor Pro‑Tem Jason Holland moved adoption; the board voted 4‑0 to create the council.
Evan Fleming presented the Fire Department Community Connect Program, a voluntary registry allowing property owners to provide information about properties and occupants to help first responders respond faster and more safely.
Town Manager Rush also provided routine updates including the Gold Star Memorial dedication set for Thursday at 2:00 PM at the Emerald Isle Public Boating Access Area at 6800 Emerald Drive, the budget timeline with a recommended budget to be presented in May and possible adoption in June, and upcoming interviews for a new fire chief.
