Town staff presented a request to apply for the North Carolina Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access Program to improve the Channel Drive beach access and make it ADA‑compliant.
Candace (speaker 13) told the board the project would extend access by about 270 feet and that project quotes totaled about $99,827. She said the grant had a required match and staff would seek approximately $74,870 from the grant while budgeting about $25,000 from the town in fiscal year 26/27 if the grant is awarded.
Commissioners asked whether parking spaces could be widened and whether a wheelchair turnaround or unload area could be included. Candace said the parking spaces could be slightly widened and the site would be paved to accommodate wheelchairs; the board amended the motion to specifically explore adding ADA‑compliant servicing for parking spaces and adopt the grant application resolution with that language included. The motion passed on a voice vote.
