Residents ask for better audio access and ice-safety signs; council notes trash compactor installed and salt policy

Residents used the public-comment portions of the Jan. 6 Port Republic City Council meeting to press local officials on accessibility and safety concerns.
Bob Haviland of 316 English Creek Road told the council he supported installing a sound system so the audience could hear the meetings better and suggested there might be ADA funding available to help cover costs. Joe Martin of 5 Mill Street asked the city to place signs advising people not to walk on the ice at Mill Pond; councilmembers said they would look into the request.
Council leadership and staff used committee reports to outline municipal operations. Council President Pro Tempore Steven Allgeyer reported that Public Works has been trimming trees along Indian Cabin Road, maintaining equipment, picking up trash along county roadways and salting county roadways during storms after completing city roadways; Mayor Monica Giberson confirmed that salting county roads in that sequence was agreed on for resident safety. Council also noted a newly installed trash compactor is functioning well.
During a later public-comment turn, Haviland reported there is an old iron wheel across from the old cemetery and asked Public Works to remove it; Councilmember Michael Turner said he would ask neighborhood youths to remove it or arrange for pickup.
The council closed public comment and proceeded with routine business and adopted administrative resolutions. The meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m.
