Residents press Port Republic for county help after storm; council hears speed studies and sign problems

During public comment at the Feb. 10 Port Republic council meeting, resident John Yochim asked whether the council would send a letter to Atlantic County about what he called a lack of response during the recent snowstorm. Mayor Monica Giberson said she had contacted the County requesting equipment assistance; she was told the County considers some of its equipment outdated and that shared-service options remain under consideration.
Council heard from Scott Winneberger in Police/Emergency Management that two speed studies—one for Main Street and one for English Creek Road—had been completed and shared with the New Jersey State Police. In response to a separate public comment, resident Bob Haviland said the radar speed sign on English Creek Road near The Gunning Club had stopped working; Winneberger explained the sign is solar powered and can stop functioning during extended overcast weather.
Public-works and public-safety notes included Mayor Giberson thanking the Public Works Department for snow removal and Councilmember Eugene Hawn reporting that a floating dock had been damaged after it was not removed before the storm. The council did not take formal action on the county response request during the meeting; the mayor said she would continue to pursue options.
