Senior programs draw dozens weekly; commission hears recap of meals, classes and trips

Jeff Franco, presenting on senior programs at the July 8 meeting of the Brisbane Park and Rec Commission, summarized weekly activities, partnerships and recent outings for the city's senior population.

Franco said Monday lunches provide free hot meals to "over 80" seniors, with a Samaritan House partnership supplying food and a volunteer (Paul Bridal) delivering to roughly 15 households. He described a Food Rocket-style donation that functions like a small farmers’ market during lunch hours and said volunteers and program partners reduce waste by ensuring leftovers are put to use.

The presentation noted an 'agile aging' fall-prevention class led by Dr. Abney that has expanded to two sessions and averages about 12–13 participants per session (roughly 25–30 people in total). Wednesday catered lunches attract about 50–60 participants and the program estimates provisioning around 70 meals (including take-home meals for absent participants). Franco also listed recent senior trips (Academy of Sciences, Bay Model, county fair, Oakland Zoo, a 9th Circuit courthouse tour) and highlighted intergenerational programming involving the Youth Advisory Committee.

Commissioners thanked staff and volunteers, identified additional volunteer resources (Food Rescue) and confirmed that some presenters (Dr. Abney and art instructor Shirley) are engaged as contractors rather than volunteers.
