Brisbane Park and Rec Commission approves targeted community survey, forms ad hoc committee

The Brisbane Park and Rec Commission voted July 8 to proceed with a targeted community survey to help prioritize upcoming park and recreation projects, and commissioners agreed to convene an ad hoc survey committee to shape the questionnaire and outreach.

At the meeting, staff told commissioners the department typically conducts a comprehensive needs assessment every five years (the last was in 2022) and offered two approaches: a full needs assessment or a narrower priorities survey that would inform immediate master-plan decisions, including Parcel R and the Crocker Trail. After discussion about scope and representativeness, a commissioner moved to conduct a survey; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The commission instructed staff to form an ad hoc survey committee to develop specific categories and draft questions before the commission’s next meeting.

Commissioners named or volunteered preliminary members for the ad hoc committee, including Byron and Trudy and another commissioner to be finalized offline. Staff said the committee should meet prior to the September meeting so the commission can review a proposed outline and timeline. Commissioners emphasized wanting a survey that is specific enough to inform decisions about master-plan elements rather than a generic overview.

The motion authorized staff to begin work on the survey framework; commissioners did not approve the final survey questions or a budget at the July 8 meeting. The commission plans to review the committee’s recommendations at a future meeting and then decide on distribution methods and timing.

What’s next: the ad hoc survey committee will meet to draft a proposed survey outline; staff will report back to the commission ahead of the Sept. 9, 2026 meeting.
