The Public Art and Design Board discussed a proposed decorative, metal photo-op sign for Coachmen Park and signaled support for a colorful design that spells out "Clearwater." Staff said the sample designs came from Sharp Metal Studios and estimated an installation cost of about $35,000; they proposed soliciting bids from several fabricators rather than issuing a general call to artists.
Board members emphasized marketing value and photoability. One member said spelling out "Clearwater" helps promote the city to visitors and makes the piece easier to photograph than a very long scripted logo; several members preferred a compact block-text treatment that fits easily in selfies. "Were all in agreement on more colorful [options] and spelling it out," staff summarized.
Members raised concerns about materials and upkeep in a salty, sunny coastal environment and asked staff to require maintenance plans from vendors and to consider materials that withstand oxidation and UV exposure. Staff replied the procurement would request a maintenance plan as part of vendor proposals, and noted that some local examples are maintained by homeowners' associations rather than municipalities.
Placement and lighting were also discussed; members suggested siting the sign where photos can include the water and bridge and considered seasonal swap-in features to refresh the display for events or holidays. Staff will refine the concept, collect bids and maintenance information from fabricators, and return to the board with procurement options and placement recommendations.
