Alma council approves rezoning, adopts sewer lateral ordinance and buys Riverland property

The Alma Common Council on Feb. 13 voted unanimously to re-zone industrial lots off Shawnee Drive to business/commercial, adopt a sewer ordinance amendment and approve the city's offer to purchase the Riverland Energy property.
The council adopted Ordinance #25-01 amending rules for sewer laterals in the R2 district after a public hearing with no public comment. The ordinance was moved and seconded and passed with all members voting yes.
Council members then approved the Finance/Tax & License/Zoning Committee recommendation to re-zone the Shawnee Drive lots to business/commercial by roll call vote. Chair Gary Jepsen presented the committee's recommendation. "The committee recommended approval," Jepsen said during the meeting.
The council also approved the Offer to Purchase the Riverland Energy property, removing item #12 from the draft offer before passage. Council discussion included a cost comparison: Larry Grisen said repairing an existing property would cost about $600,000 to restore roughly 1,500 square feet compared with buying a larger property for $325,000, calling the latter "a no brainer."
Other formal actions included unanimous approval of the financial and treasurer's reports for January 2025, acceptance of several committee reports, and adoption of Resolution #25-01 recognizing World Migratory Bird Day. A Notice of Disallowance of Claim dated Dec. 3, 2024 was also approved. The meeting adjourned after setting upcoming committee meeting dates.
