Alma council approves $40,000 design proposal and asbestos test for Riverland Energy building renovation

The City of Alma Common Council on April 17 approved a $40,000 proposal for professional services to remodel the former Riverland Energy building at 1225 S. Main Street and authorized an asbestos inspection costing $3,440.
The actions, taken during the regular monthly meeting, also included approval of a $3,100 sign for the new city building from La Crosse Sign Company. Mayor Richard Champeny told the Council he is researching the process for hiring a general contractor for the renovation and will report back to the body.
Finance/Tax & License/Zoning committee member Larry Grisen presented the proposals and said the committee supported moving the items to the full Council. The asbestos inspection will be performed by Legend Technical Services, Inc., as approved by the Council.
The Council approved the measures by roll-call votes. Grisen said the committee also discussed the need for a building inspector; the committee has identified an interested candidate and will examine compensation and training costs before making further recommendations.
The meeting record also notes a separate Facilities-related item: the Riverland Energy building will need different garage doors to accommodate fire trucks, and the mayor is working with the project architect on that issue.
Next steps: the mayor will continue procurement work on the renovation and report to the Council on contractor selection and any next costs or approvals required.
