Board completes annual ethics training and approves board-member code of ethics

At the start of the regular session the board received its annual School Ethics Act and code-of-ethics training from William Burns of Hartman & Duff, who explained the training requirement and reviewed statutory conflict-of-interest definitions and recusal obligations.

Burns described the law’s purpose "to ensure and preserve public confidence" and reviewed definitions such as immediate family and relative relationships that can create conflicts. He noted potential consequences for violations, including reprimand, censure, suspension or removal, and said advisory opinions and complaints can be referred to the School Ethics Commission or the New Jersey School Boards Association.

Following the presentation, the board moved to approve the board-member code of ethics as listed on the agenda. The motion to approve the code was moved by Kidney and seconded by Egan and carried by roll call. The board confirmed members had received copies of the School Ethics Act and the code of ethics documents.

The training and adoption were presented as part of the board’s annual compliance with state training requirements and to reinforce members’ obligations to avoid conflicts of interest and to refer complaints to the superintendent or appropriate body rather than acting unilaterally.
