Student representatives and dozens of students recognized at Toms River board meeting

Student representatives from Toms River High School East, North and South opened the Dec. 17 board meeting with updates on school events, service projects and athletics.
Makayla Melanak (High School East) told the board the STEAM open house on Dec. 3 drew more than 300 community members and highlighted homecoming, senior recognitions and a student effort that provided Thanksgiving meals for 68 families. Alicia Labella (High School North) described a joint National Honor Society / Student Council food drive and a blood drive in the arena; she said homerooms and community partners donated toys and raised roughly $2,800 in gifts for struggling local families. Makayla Manzi (High School South) summarized arts and athletics milestones, including marching band and state tournament results.
The board then presented multiple awards: winners in a Veterans Day essay contest, recipients of MIT Future Makers coding recognition, an internship award at a Biobehavioral Health Psychology Research Center, winners at a Data Nova research symposium, STEM fellowship recipients, and members of a student team that won an international space design competition. Several staff and volunteers were thanked for supporting student programs.
Board members and the superintendent praised the students’ community engagement and academic accomplishments. The public and board also took time to congratulate retiring staff and newly promoted administrators.
Next steps: district staff will continue youth programs and support for student extracurriculars; follow-up on program participation and competitive opportunities will be coordinated by principals and program supervisors.
