Port Royal backs county list of transportation safety and intersection projects for referendum

Port Royal’s council approved a resolution on March 11 endorsing a set of transportation and safety projects the town would like considered for a countywide referendum.
Staff explained the list includes improvements tied to the Rebow Road corridor such as intersection and access-management work at Lenora Drive and Drayton Drive, signalization and median changes, closure and turnover of Old Shell Road right-of-way to expand Naval Hill Ridge Park, mid-block crossing and signal upgrades, and safety projects at Savannah Highway and Robert Smalls Parkway. The resolution also endorses installation of intelligent-traffic systems countywide and Spanish Moss Trail crossing improvements (including a HAWK-style signal).
Council members expressed support for prioritizing projects that would benefit the largest number of residents and improve safety. The resolution will go to the county Transportation Advisory Committee to be refined with engineers and cost estimates; final project inclusion would be subject to countywide voter approval if placed on a referendum.
Mayor Kevin Phillips said the list clarifies Port Royal’s priorities for the county process.
