Board hears buildings-and-grounds update: auditorium heaters, gym floor and field lights among repairs

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — During a buildings and grounds session of the Toms River Regional School District Board, facilities staff briefed members on several maintenance and capital issues, including rooftop heater failures at High School North, a buckled gym floor at Walnut Street and lighting failures at the Beechwood soccer field.
The facilities lead (speaker 2) told the board three rooftop heaters at High School North’s auditorium have been replaced over the past decade but two have now failed; one noisy unit remains operational. "They've been ordered, and it's like a 12, I think, called the 14 week lead time," the facilities lead said, and estimated replacement parts at about $30,000 per unit. Board members asked about contingency plans; the lead said the district could use temporary heat sources or relocate events to other district facilities if necessary.
Staff also reported November work-order activity of 469 requests and 451 completions, with the bulk of requests related to HVAC as systems were transitioned to heating. Crews completed relocation of a playground at North Dover Elementary (item 1144) and expect to address a remaining pavilion in the spring.
An electrical-meter installation for Beechwood’s soccer-field lights was initially put in at the wrong location, a staff member said; as a result, 16 of 24 lights are currently out. "That meter was finally put in," the staff member reported, and crews will test whether failures are bulbs or wiring over the next weeks while coordinating with neighboring municipalities to reduce costs.
Facilities staff also said the Walnut Street gym floor has buckled from moisture and humidity and will need full replacement, which will be proposed through the capital/budget process for next summer. Board members noted pursuit of a playground grant for Pine Beach Elementary with assistance from Mayor Cuneo and the Department of Consumer Affairs.
What happens next: Facilities will proceed with ordered heater replacements, continue diagnostics and repairs for field lighting, and include the Walnut Street gym-floor replacement in capital budgeting for the next fiscal cycle. No members of the public attended to offer comment.
