NRC inspector says Callaway plant operating safely; resident inspector role explained

Nathan Brown, senior resident inspector for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at the Callaway nuclear power plant, introduced himself to the Fulton City Council and provided a 2025 performance overview of NRC oversight at Callaway.
Brown described the NRC—s reactor oversight program, noting that resident inspectors implement a prescriptive inspection program and that NRC teams review performance indicators and inspection findings to determine oversight intensity. "Concerning Callaway, our review of their performance in 2025 indicates that Ameren is safely operating the power plant, and they are receiving the minimal amount of inspection for this year," Brown said. He added that the NRC posts inspection reports and oversight information on its website and that he and his staff would be available after the meeting for questions.
Brown also explained that resident inspectors are normally maintained in pairs on-site, that he had been working alone for a year but that a second resident inspector was selected and expected to arrive in July, and that region and headquarters offices provide additional oversight.
Councilmembers thanked Brown and noted the NRC—s role in protecting people and the environment; Brown offered to answer questions during and after the session and provided resources for public review of NRC inspection reports.
