Council hears resident opposition to rezoning at 305 W. 14th and postpones bill; annexation moved to second reading

At a public hearing the council heard opposition from a long-time resident to a proposed rezoning at 305 West 14th Street and later voted to postpone action on the ordinance.

Timothy Walker, who said his family has lived at 1417 Monroe Street within the rezoning area for more than 50 years, told the council he opposed the R-1-to-R-2 change because it would alter neighborhood character and could trigger a ‘‘domino effect’’ of duplex development that would harm property values and the sense of community. “I stand before you tonight not as a developer, a vester, or a political crew, but as a father, a resident, and a property owner who calls this neighborhood home,” Walker said.

After the public hearing the council read Bill 17-83 into the record (rezoning 305 West 14th) and later a motion to postpone the bill to the next regularly scheduled council meeting was seconded and approved by roll call. Planning and zoning had recommended passage earlier, but councilmembers asked for more time and clarity for the public to review materials.

Separately, the council read and moved to second reading Bill 17-87, proposing annexation of approximately 16.53 acres at 4930 State Road HH into Fulton (near Tanglewood Business Park); staff clarified zoning will be established in a subsequent step and that the ordinance language will be corrected if it initially referenced zoning improperly.

The council did not vote to reclassify 305 West 14th at this meeting; the rezoning matter will return for further consideration at the council—s next regular meeting.
