Planning staff presented the first draft of a Coastal Craftsman chapter for a design guideline guidebook intended to help applicants and staff align new construction with appropriate styles and features.
A board member urged the inclusion of suggested color palettes as a design element, arguing the community is losing its historic colorful vernacular to new builds that are predominantly white. "I've been struggling to find a new build in the last five years that is not a shade of white," the member said, and proposed style‑specific palettes (for example, an earthy palette for Craftsman, more vibrant palettes for Key West/Coastal styles).
Staff said the consultant has provided a first concept and that earlier guidebook recommendations may already include palettes; staff agreed to consult with the consultant (Tara) and bring forward suggested color palettes for each architectural style chapter if the board wants them included. Members agreed the palettes should be advisory, not mandatory, to guide homeowners and architects rather than restrict design choices.
The discussion will inform upcoming revisions to the guidebook and staff will report back with palette options for board consideration.
