Board hears attendance dip, MTSS work and plans for after-school math tutoring

The Long Hill Township Board received curriculum and attendance updates that will shape intervention work next semester. Anne (student achievement liaison) said the district hosted Magnolia Consulting in November to support implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and plans follow-up professional development in February.
“We're beginning after-school math tutoring in grades 3 through 7,” the liaison said. Invitations were sent this week; classes will run weekly for about eight to 10 weeks starting at the end of January and target students based on state and district benchmark data and teacher recommendations.
The board discussed attendance metrics: November’s monthly attendance was 92.5% and the district is at 96% for the school year so far. The superintendent noted the district goal is 97% and reminded the board that New Jersey statute requires a corrective action plan when a school has 10% or more of students with 18 or more absences in a school year.
The discussion included steps to monitor chronic absenteeism and a targeted family survey sent to households of students with excessive absences to collect feedback and guide corrective actions. The board said it will continue monitoring school-by-school attendance data available on the district website.
