Robin Hayward, representing the ABC Baby Center in Hyannis, told members of the Mashpee Women’s Club at the club luncheon that the center has moved into a larger space at 232 Main Street and is seeking layette items and other donations.
Hayward said the center distributed roughly 414,000 diapers last year, serves a little over 2,000 unduplicated parent clients and about 3,500 babies, and offers referrals for food, housing and other supports. "Everything is free at a baby center," she said, describing volunteer-staffed services and an Amazon wish list for specific items.
Hayward described two kit programs: a new postpartum kit for new mothers and a liète/layette kit for expectant parents at 30 weeks, which she said is designed to feel like "a baby shower in a basket." She asked the club to prioritize newborn and size 1 diapers, wipes, receiving blankets, baby washcloths, small clothing items, swaddles and basic hygiene items for layette kits, noting those items are critically needed now.
In response to members’ questions, Hayward clarified that ABC Baby Center operates as a program of the Cape Cod Council of Churches and participates in the National Diaper Bank Network, which she said gives the center access to discounted bulk diaper purchases. She also noted partnerships with United Way's baby-shower efforts and said volunteers and part-time staff run services at the center.
The club’s host reminded members that the next meeting will include a collection at the Poppy Tent; Hayward asked that members bring the requested layette items or cash donations.
The presentation did not include a formal vote or action; the club will collect items at the next meeting and the baby center accepts donations year-round.
