Long Beach Island board adopts revised policies on curriculum, emergency response, weapons and student suicide prevention

The Long Beach Island Board of Education voted Aug. 20 to adopt a package of nine new and revised district policies and regulations addressing curriculum, health screenings, attendance, service animals, student suicide prevention, emergency response and firearms and weapons.
The policies adopted in a second reading include P 0141 Board Member Number and Term (revised); P 2200 Curriculum Content (M) (revised); P & R 316/416 Physical Examination (M) (revised); R 5200 Attendance (M) (revised); P 5337 Service Animals (revised); P 5350 Student Suicide Prevention (M) (revised); P 8420 Emergency and Crisis Situations (M) (revised); and P & R 8467 Firearms and Weapons (M) (revised).
Board member Brielle Hoffacker moved the measure and it passed by roll call: six yes votes and one abstention by Mr. Schragger.
According to the minutes, the revisions include items marked (M), reflecting policies with statutory or regulatory implications; the board did not read policy text at the meeting and no specific implementation dates or budgetary impacts were listed in the minutes.
Board members and administrators indicated the district's Wellness Committee and other standing committees will coordinate any downstream procedural updates needed to align operations with the revised policies.
The board will implement the policies per normal district procedures; any operational changes or staff training implied by the revisions will be scheduled through administration and relevant committees.
